How to set global hotkeys in VLC #

VLC allows you to define global hotkeys that work even when the application is minimized or not focused (not the active window).

Follow these steps to configure them:

  1. Open VLC Media Player.
  2. Go to Tools > Preferences or press Ctrl + P.
  3. At the bottom left, select All under Show settings to open advanced preferences.
  4. In the left panel, navigate to Interface > Hotkeys settings.
  5. Scroll through the list to find the actions you want to assign global hotkeys to (such as “Play/Pause”, “Next Track”, or “Stop”).
  6. Double-click the desired action.
  7. In the dialog that appears, you can set a Hotkey and a Global hotkey.
  8. Click OK and then Save to apply changes.
  9. Restart VLC for changes to take effect

Avoid conflicts with system shortcuts or other applications when setting global hotkeys.

Global hotkeys may not work if another application or the operating system uses the same key combination. Choose unique combinations to avoid conflicts.
